EconomyMassive bailout for Australia’s largest aluminium smelter expected
Australia’s prime minister, Anthony Albanese, and New South Wales premier Chris Minns are preparing a major bailout for the country’s largest aluminium smelter. The proposed deal could be worth up to $2.5bn. Rio Tinto, which operates the Tomago aluminium smelter in New South Wales, said in December that it was considering ending operations when its current electricity supply contract expires. The package is expected to be announced by the two leaders.
