ScienceMale redback spiders invite cannibalism with a ‘self-sacrificial somersault’ during sex

New research examines the genetic basis of the redback spider’s unusual mating behaviour. The venomous spider’s sole reproductive partner eats the male after mating. Researchers say males appear to encourage this cannibalism by performing a “self-sacrificial somersault”. The study seeks to clarify why this striking behaviour occurs.
