WorldInvestigation: Russia recruits women from prisons as frontline medics
A new investigation by the independent Russian outlet Verstka details Russia’s recruitment of women from prisons for medical service near the front. According to the report, the Defense Ministry began an experiment called “Choice” in 2024. Military recruiters sought volunteers in women’s penal colonies across several regions and assigned them to tactical medicine units treating wounded soldiers. The investigation also documents rape allegedly committed by commanders and criminal cases brought against women who reported it.
