WorldSyrian court sentences Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia for war crimes

A Syrian court has sentenced former president Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher to death in absentia. The verdict concerns crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed during the country’s 14-year civil war. About half a million people died in the conflict. The brothers fled to Moscow after a lightning rebel offensive in December 2024 toppled the dictatorial regime in just 11 days.
