CultureRussian theater exiles and artists who stayed have almost nowhere to meet — except once a year in Yerevan
Russia’s theater world fractured after 2022 as many directors, actors, and playwrights emigrated, leaving longtime collaborators separated. Institutions including the Gogol Center, Meyerhold Center, the NET festival, and Teatr magazine closed amid pressure from the authorities. Few places remain where artists who left Russia and those who stayed can encounter each other’s work. Chronofest is a rare exception: the festival was founded in St. Petersburg by the Khronotop theater company and later relocated to Yerevan. Its latest edition took place in late spring and early summer 2026.
