Since beginning his second term, President Donald Trump has mounted an aggressive effort to make the Federal Reserve follow his preferences. Publicly at least, the campaign breaks with the modern practice of shielding the US central bank from political interference. Trump has pressed Jerome Powell, the Fed chair he appointed during his first term, to lower interest rates. He has also tried to remove another Fed governor, Lisa Cook, from her position.
