PoliticsCosta Rican diplomat emerges as strong contender to be first female head of UN
Costa Rican diplomat and former vice-president Rebeca Grynspan has unexpectedly emerged as a leading contender to head the United Nations. She is seen as a continuity candidate with tacit backing from current secretary general António Guterres and could become the organisation’s first female secretary general. Grynspan currently leads the UN Conference on Trade and Development. Her parents emigrated from Poland to Central America after surviving the Holocaust, while her maternal grandparents were killed by the Nazis. The agency she heads has extensively assessed the economic damage attributed to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.
