SocietyHospitality app Supp calls gig workers contractors, raising entitlement concerns
Australian hospitality gig-work app Supp is facing concerns that users may be missing out on employment entitlements after being classified as independent contractors. Workers’ rights experts have raised alarm over the requirement for applicants to provide Australian Business Numbers, arguing that some advertised jobs may offer little worker autonomy. Supp launched in Melbourne in 2017 and describes itself as a jobs marketplace connecting hospitality businesses with people seeking ad-hoc shifts. The company was created by Kate and Cameron Reid, who retain a financial interest but no longer sit on its board.
