WorldNazi shipwrecks emerge as drought drains the Danube
Record heat and drought have pushed the Danube to exceptionally low levels, exposing dozens of Second World War warships from Europe’s Nazi past. A shattered hull appeared on a mid-river sandbank along the Serbian-Romanian border, an area normally covered by water. Other vessels remain partly submerged, with some believed to still contain weapons. The retreating river has also revealed unexploded ordnance and a military motorcycle. The discoveries highlight the wartime remnants hidden beneath the riverbed.
