HealthSt Basil’s managers struggle to recall tragedy as grieving families hear testimony

A coronial inquest into the St Basil’s aged care tragedy has resumed in Melbourne on the sixth anniversary of the deaths. Nearly a quarter of the home’s 188 residents died during July and August 2020 from Covid-19 or neglect. Konstantin Kontis and Vicky Kos, the facility’s most senior managers at the time, were compelled to testify after repeated legal efforts to avoid giving evidence failed. Families attended court to hear their accounts, with quiet sobs audible during the proceedings.
