PoliticsUSA: Democrats’ progressive wing ‘can win primaries’; can it win a general election?
Stuart Norval welcomes Steven Ekovich, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the American University of Paris, for a discussion. The Michigan Democratic Senate primary illustrates the tension between ideological conviction and electoral pragmatism. Ekovich says progressive candidates are gaining strength in Democratic primaries, particularly in urban and heavily Democratic constituencies. Yet converting that momentum into victories in competitive swing states remains much harder. He argues that divisions inside the Democratic Party could affect both Michigan’s outcome and the party’s wider chances of controlling the U.S. Senate.
