SocietyFrench farmers ‘heavily impacted’ by climate crisis, psychologically and economically
Jean-Mathieu Thévenot, a farmer in France’s Basque Country, says 2026 marks a turning point as climate disruption becomes an immediate agricultural, economic and cultural reality. His own farm has been only partly affected because its production cycle ended earlier in the season. Yet he describes daily difficulties facing vegetable growers, livestock farmers and fruit producers across southwestern France. Thévenot belongs to the Confédération Paysanne union and the international La Via Campesina movement.
