ScienceBlowing bubbles may help resting sperm whales stay submerged
Scientists think sperm whales may use bubbles to remain suspended beneath the ocean surface while resting. The whales have massive heads containing oil, wax and air, features that might otherwise make them drift upward. Their ability to stay underwater is compared with the effort needed to hold a cork below the surface. The finding suggests bubble blowing could help manage their buoyancy.
