CultureChinese archaeologists uncover 2,300-year-old grain wine and decode its brewing method
Chinese archaeologists have found traces of grain wine dating back 2,300 years at a cemetery associated with people from Qin State in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Multidisciplinary testing identified the ancient drink’s ingredients and brewing techniques. Researchers recovered 3,740 milliliters of liquid remains from a Qin-style bronze pot shaped like a garlic head. Its double-layer sealing, using textiles inside and mud outside, limited evaporation and preserved the wine unusually well. The find has been described as the most complete and information-rich publicly reported Qin-era alcohol relic from the Warring States Period in China.
