SocietyToronto Zoo announces birth of pygmy hippo calf
Toronto Zoo has announced the arrival of a female pygmy hippo calf. The newborn is the third calf for Kindia, the zoo’s 20-year-old pygmy hippo. Officials said Kindia began showing signs of labour at about 8.15am last Sunday. The calf’s feet appeared roughly four hours later, followed by 1.5 hours of active labour before the birth was completed successfully. Zoo staff are monitoring the calf, as survival rates for the species remain challenging.
