World‘Escalatory spiral of attrition’: Drone technology lets Ukraine resist Russia asymmetrically

Peter Zalmayev, director of the Eurasia Democracy Initiative, rejects claims that Moscow is only now taking the gloves off against Ukraine. He says Russia has consistently pursued maximalist objectives while changing tactics to match battlefield conditions. Ukrainian innovation, especially in drone warfare, has made Russia’s military superiority more difficult to apply. But Zalmayev argues that technological ingenuity cannot indefinitely offset gaps in manpower, industrial capacity and outside military support. He says the conflict has entered an “escalatory spiral of attrition.”
