Astronomers have spotted a white dwarf surrounded by two rings of planetary debris. The Sun is expected to exhaust its fuel billions of years from now, swell into a red giant and shed its outer layers, leaving a dense white-dwarf core; some solar-system planets may be destroyed while others survive.
