For 17 years, Shi Xiaojun has studied and protected coral reefs across the South China Sea, overcoming seasickness, deep-diving fears, painful marine stings and dangerous storms. He helped document more than 170 reef-building coral species in the Nansha Islands and led the creation of China’s first coral reef database and monitoring system and its first high-resolution resource map.
