Beidao Island in Sansha, Hainan, is home to China’s largest remaining natural nesting ground for green sea turtles. Inspired by his father, Huang Cheng has protected them since arriving in 1997, patrolling beaches, marking nests and teaching fishermen how to avoid harming turtles and release accidental catches. Nesting numbers and hatchling survival have risen.
