ScienceChina’s space station sets new atomic cooling record

Chinese scientists cooled a cloud of rubidium atoms aboard the space station to an equivalent temperature 9.7 trillionths of a degree above absolute zero, which the research team described as a record low. The cloud’s expansion was observed for seven seconds after release, offering more time to investigate quantum behavior and improve precision measurements. The experiment took place in the Mengtian module’s ultracold atom facility, and the findings appeared in Science.
