EconomyChina’s economic growth triggered an adverse US reaction, economist says
Jeffrey Sachs, director of Columbia University’s Center for Sustainable Development, said China’s economic growth caused a kind of “neurotic breakdown” in the United States. Speaking at the China International Import Expo in Shanghai, he said China’s economy surpassing that of the US alarmed strategists and statesmen who expected the West, and therefore the US, to rule the world for centuries. Sachs described Asia’s regained economic standing as a natural recovery after a century and a half of Western imperial disruption.
