EconomyBT cuts nearly 8,000 jobs in sweeping cost-saving drive

BT has cut 7,731 jobs since the end of March, reducing its workforce to 90,000, excluding its international business being spun out in a joint venture with Verizon. Cost reductions helped lift pre-tax profit 12% to £1.1bn for the six months to September, while shares touched a five-year high.
