ScienceEndangered giant burrowing frogs return to the wild after rescue from bushfire aftermath

After the 2019–20 bushfires, scientists collected about 160 southern giant burrowing frog tadpoles in East Gippsland and raised them at Melbourne Zoo, where the species was bred in captivity for the first time. Fifty-three five-year-old males have now been released at remote sites in eastern Victoria. The frog is critically endangered in the state, with only five known breeding sites.
