Democrats made major gains in the US midterm elections, which also sent candidates from underrepresented groups into several major offices for the first time. Chris Pappas became the country’s first openly gay senator; Deb Haaland became the first Native American woman elected governor, Gina Hinojosa the first Hispanic woman in the role, and Keisha Lance Bottoms the first Black woman to serve as a US governor.
