Society‘Nine Lives’, the feral cat that terrorised New Zealand’s rare ducks, is killed
A notorious feral cat known as “Nine Lives” has been caught and killed in New Zealand after avoiding trappers for three years. The large grey tabby was blamed for killing dozens of pāteke, or brown teal, on the Purerua peninsula near the top of the North Island. The losses were estimated at about 1% of the country’s rarest mainland duck population. The cat was also linked to the deaths of kiwi chicks, native geckos and other wildlife.
