Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has formally begun his campaign for re-election. Speaking to crowds in São Paulo on August 2, the 80-year-old veteran said he was in “great shape” as he seeks a fourth and final term in office. Lula’s leading election rival is Flavio Bolsonaro, the 45-year-old senator and eldest son of Jair Bolsonaro. Flavio took on that role after the far-right former president was convicted of plotting a coup aimed at stopping Lula from taking power in 2023.
