SocietyMalaysia cracks down on social media hiking trend after rise in rescues

Malaysia is tightening hiking rules across the country after a social-media trend was linked to a growing number of rescue operations. Officials are moving to ban some “compressed hikes”, in which walkers attempt demanding routes within shortened timeframes. More adventurers have become lost or stranded in remote areas. The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department told local media that 52 lost-hiker cases were recorded in the first five months of 2026, nearly 30% more than during the same period last year.
