The EU has abandoned the idea of Canada becoming an “associate member,” according to dpa and Reuters. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other EU leaders reportedly pushed to remove the wording from a draft joint statement, which instead calls for an “ever closer association” between Canada and the bloc.
