Australian treasurer Jim Chalmers said overheated social media discourse plays a large part in making politics toxic, including threats and abuse directed at politicians. Referring to the alleged attack last week on MP Helen Haines, he said hate now has a business model for mass production. Haines is recovering in hospital; police have charged a 43-year-old man over the alleged attack.
