China’s official Xinhua News Agency announced that Liu Yandong, a former vice-premier, died of illness in Beijing at 81. She served two consecutive terms on the Communist Party’s Politburo. Her death has drawn attention to the end, after the 2022 party congress, of a 20-year run in which the body had at least one female member.
