ScienceA hidden ocean shift near Antarctica could have global consequences

Scientists say the rapid loss of Antarctic sea ice since 2016 has coincided with a sharp rise in salinity in Antarctic Intermediate Water, a deep layer encircling Antarctica. The change reverses decades of freshening and could have effects beyond the region because the water spreads into the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans, carrying heat, carbon, oxygen and nutrients.
