WorldSatellite images show oil spill widening off UAE coast
New satellite images show an oil spill from early October expanding off Umm Al Quwain, a northern emirate of the UAE. Authorities have not confirmed its cause or the tanker involved; shipping sources say the vessel was hit by an “unidentified projectile.” Experts believe it may have been the Gem No.2. Beaches and coastal areas around the city have been temporarily closed since Oct. 23 as the oil nears shore. The UAE says efforts are under way to contain the leak and assess environmental damage.
