WorldCeuta: 60,000 cross the border, 57 died
A deadly day of chaos in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta has given way to a temporary calm. Around 60,000 migrants entered the territory, while roughly 45,000 returned to neighbouring Morocco within hours. Authorities told people to turn back and warned that those who stayed could eventually face expulsion. The scale of the surge raised fears of a humanitarian crisis. Many migrants had hoped that reaching Ceuta would help them continue towards mainland Spain and Europe.
