WorldCeuta: Most migrants have returned to Morocco, 57 died crossing the border
Spanish officials say more than 48,000 migrants have gone back to Morocco after roughly 50,000 people crossed by sea into Spain’s enclave of Ceuta. France and Italy tightened border controls on Saturday, while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced a suspension of Schengen free movement between Spain and Italy. Human Rights Watch says the returns were chaotic and the figures remain uncertain. The heavily fortified border is extremely difficult and dangerous to cross, with 57 deaths reported during the crisis. Special rules in Ceuta also restrict onward travel.
