ScienceNew fungal family found in Yunnan has massive fruiting body
Chinese scientists found a new fungal family in Yunnan whose first known species, Dianjunus rex, produces fleshy reproductive structures up to 50 centimeters tall. An exceptionally large specimen weighed about 2.2 kilograms. Researchers estimate Yunnan has roughly 104,000 fungal species, compared with about 6,000 documented so far; DNA analysis suggests the fungus emerged around 65 million years ago.
