CultureThe Red Army Umbrella: A pine tree for those who never came home
Tibetan locals near Jiajin Mountain in southwestern Sichuan named a pine tree the “Red Army Umbrella,” hoping it would stay evergreen and watch over the fallen. Ma Hua said her grandfather saw Red Army soldiers die while crossing the mountain; locals later followed their route to recover the bodies and buried the martyrs beside the tree, using it as a marker.
