CultureOne lamp, one surname: Three generations of devotion
Museum instructor Ma Hua says her Tibetan family originally had no Han surname. Her grandfather Teba guided the Red Army over Jiajin Mountain during the Long March. As they parted, a soldier gave him a kerosene lamp and the name “Ma Denghong”; the family has used Ma as its surname ever since. Ma says she walked the same mountain route with her parents from childhood.
