ScienceRiver dolphin conservation gains are uneven worldwide

International Freshwater Dolphin Day seeks to raise awareness of freshwater dolphins and their habitats. A 2025 survey counted 1,426 Yangtze finless porpoises, up 177 from 2022, while other river dolphin populations in South and Southeast Asia remain vulnerable to habitat damage and fishing-related threats. Many transboundary rivers still lack coordinated protection.
