ScienceSnow Leopard Day: Protecting the ‘ghost of the mountains’
The UN-designated International Day of the Snow Leopard fell on October 23. China contains roughly 60% of the species’ global habitat. A survey in Xinjiang identified 109 animals using 312 infrared cameras, and researchers estimated about 205 snow leopards in and around Tomur Peak National Nature Reserve. AI monitoring, compensation schemes and cross-border cooperation support conservation, while habitat loss, declining prey and retaliatory killings remain threats.
