WorldStretched, not squeezed: Why the Xizang quake was a 'pull-apart'
The China Earthquake Networks Center said the magnitude-7.0 quake in Baqen County, Xizang, was an extensional rupture within the Qiangtang block, about 2 kilometers from the Baqen-Leiwuqi fault. By Friday morning, 23 aftershocks of magnitude 3.0 or higher had been recorded, the strongest at 4.3. At least 16 people were killed and 76 injured by 1 p.m. Friday, and more than 5,000 rescuers had been deployed. Officials warned that aftershocks could further weaken damaged homes, while rockfalls and landslides pose hazards in the high-altitude area.
