ScienceChina to build the world's first deep-sea floating island
China plans to build a floating artificial island for long-term, all-weather deep-sea research. Shanghai Jiao Tong University will undertake the project, with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding constructing it under a 2.76 billion yuan contract. Construction is expected to begin in 2028, with delivery in June 2030. The semi-submersible twin-hull platform is designed to withstand sea state 7 and a category 17 typhoon.
