EconomyUK approves development of Jackdaw gasfield in North Sea

The UK government has approved a gas project off Scotland. Energy Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh said the Jackdaw field would start supplying homes by month’s end and could raise peak UK gas production by about 6 percent, supporting energy security but not lowering household bills. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said it would protect jobs and help heat homes. The government also announced a £2 billion initial fund for renewable and low-carbon projects. The Green Party and Greenpeace criticized the decision.
