ScienceJapan launches probe to bring back soil from Mars’s moon Phobos

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s MMX spacecraft launched toward Mars on October 19, Moscow time. It will study Phobos and Deimos and attempt to return a soil sample from one of them, something scientists have never achieved. A similar Russian mission failed in 2011 when its spacecraft burned up after a launch error.
