Rubbish remained strewn across Marseille on Sunday, a day after demonstrations over rising living costs and declining public services spiralled out of control in some areas, becoming some of France’s worst violence in decades. Black-clad protesters broke into the city hall and defaced it with graffiti; public buildings in other French cities were also targeted.
