ScienceGlacier melt rates depend on climate and shape, scientists say
Scientists at Russia’s Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute found that glacier melting depends on ice mass shape and size as well as climate. Monitoring of the Aldegonda and West Grenfjord glaciers on Spitsbergen found they lost about 18–20 meters of water-equivalent mass from 2013 to 2025. Their movement into lower, warmer zones adds to annual ice loss, and researchers recommend applying the method to other glaciers.
