ScienceMicroplastics in water aren’t inert and can produce damaging chemicals

A new Nature study suggests microplastics may not be as chemically inert as expected. Wei Min’s team at Columbia University examined microdroplet chemistry, in which tiny water droplets can generate reactive oxygen species at the air boundary. These molecules can damage proteins, lipids and DNA. Whether microplastics directly cause human disease remains under study.
