ScienceForest loss slowed in 2025, but scientists say not to count on it

The annual Forest Declaration Assessment says global forest loss fell 15% in 2025 to about 7 million hectares. Deforestation dropped 33% in Latin America, while the Congo Basin lost 2.4 million hectares of rainforest, nearing the Amazon’s level. A report co-author cautioned that the slowdown may be an exception, and said a powerful El Niño in 2026–2027 could raise drought and wildfire risks in tropical forests.
