Shanghai, Charleroi in Belgium and Liverpool in the UK have won the World Intellectual Property Organization’s first “City of Innovation” awards. Shanghai cited its 2025 GDP of 5.67 trillion yuan and 67.6 high-value invention patents per 10,000 residents as of June 2026.
