South Korea will deploy its anti-piracy unit to a location closer to the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report.

South Korea will seek parliamentary approval to move the anti-piracy Cheonghae unit’s operating area to waters near Oman’s port of Duqm, about 650km from the Strait of Hormuz. The defence ministry says the mission would be non-combat and independent of allied forces, following Donald Trump’s criticism of Seoul’s support for the Iran war.

South Korea will send maritime patrol aircraft and an explosive ordnance disposal team near the Strait of Hormuz to help keep the waterway open, the defence ministry said Thursday. Seoul said the mission would protect commercial shipping and energy supplies, while ruling out intervention in the ongoing US-Iran war.

South Korea plans to extend the operating area of its anti-piracy Cheonghae unit toward waters nearer the Strait of Hormuz, the Defence Ministry said. The move follows pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump for South Korea to support the war in Iran.
