# Ottawa gives Stelco owners five days to reverse Hamilton plant layoffs

> The federal government is threatening legal action against the owners of Hamilton’s Stelco steel plant over plans to lay off as many as 500 workers. Industry Minister Melanie Joly wrote to Stelco’s president, calling the planned cuts a source of “extreme disappointment” and saying binding commitments remain in force despite changes in business strategy or market conditions.
